It is soluble in water and ethanol, but insoluble in ether, acetone and chloroform. It is hygroscopic and irritating. It can be used in medicine, pesticide, fuel and other basic raw materials for organic synthesis, dyes, oil fields, etc. It is used as analytical reagent and also for organic synthesis.

  Methylamine hydrochloride is used to make medicines, dyes, etc. Examples of its application are as follows:

1) A method for preparing 3- methylamino -1- (2- thienyl)-1-propanol by using 2-acetylthiophene, paraformaldehyde and monomethylamine hydrochloride. 2) Preparation of solvent blue 78, which comprises the following steps: taking methanol aqueous solution as reaction solvent, fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether as dispersant, 1,4-dihydroxy anthraquinone and monomethylamine hydrochloride as main raw materials, and 1,4-dihydroxy anthraquinone leuco as initiator or catalyst, and obtaining the target product solvent blue 78 through closed kettle condensation reaction.
